Despite the yuge gathering, many people shared side-by-side photos on social media to show Trump's crowd compared to Obama's first crowd back in 2009. The shots appear to show a much thinner crowd at Trump's inauguration. But keep in mind photos from earlier in the day can make it look way emptier than it actually was by the time Trump was taking the oath of office.

And here's Twitter's take:

Others, like Sen. Marco Rubio, seemed impressed with the numbers:

It is difficult to source the official crowd numbers for Friday's inauguration. Spokespeople for the National Park Service and the U.S. Park Police both advised Mashablethey do not provide crowd estimates. The Associated Press said the crowds appeared smaller than in past years, but did not provide an estimate. Mashablealso reached out to the Presidential Inauguration Committee, but has yet to hear back about crowd numbers.

Trump has quite the numbers to beat: Obama's second inauguration in 2012 crowd estimates were around 1 million, while back in 2009 a record-high turnout was estimated around 1.8 million, according to Politico.

With Trump fixated on size and popularity he's sure to be talking about the "bigly" inauguration crowds before long, despite what the official figures end up showing.
