The solstice occurs twice a year -- during winter and summer -- and marks the period when Earth's axis is most tilted toward, or away, from the sun. In the northern hemisphere, the winter solstice happens on Dec. 21 and marks the shortest period of daylight in the year, while the summer solstice lands on June 21. Happy summer solstice!
